For retired teacher, philanthropist, and Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools supporter Jan Oliva, supporting early learning is one of the most important investments a community can make.
“Ninety percent of brain development occurs before age five,” Jan said. “Every time I think of that fact, I have sobering thoughts of our failure to nurture and enhance the full potential of our children in that critical stage.”
That belief is one reason Jan stepped forward to support Transition to Kindergarten (TK), a free, full-day early learning program in Vancouver Public Schools designed for children who have had limited preschool experience or who would benefit from additional support before entering kindergarten.
TK gives students an opportunity to build critical social, emotional, and academic skills during a pivotal stage of development. Through hands-on learning, relationship-building, and structured classroom experiences, students gain the confidence and skills they need to thrive when they enter traditional kindergarten the following year.
For many families, the program helps bridge a gap that might otherwise put students at a disadvantage before they even begin their K-12 education.
“Investing in early learning in Vancouver School District schools means giving every student an equal opportunity to succeed,” Jan explained. “It closes the gap between those children who have experienced preschool and those who have not.”
This year, significant reductions in Washington State funding limited the capacity of several Transitional Kindergarten (TK) classrooms, restricting the district’s ability to maintain the program at the same level. Understanding the importance of early learning, Jan stepped forward with generous support to preserve four staff positions that otherwise would have been lost. Thanks to her commitment, more young learners will continue to benefit from the individualized attention, guidance, and instruction that help build a strong foundation for future success.
For Jan, the investment is about making sure every child begins their educational journey with the tools they need to succeed.
“All children should enter the door on the first day of kindergarten full of confidence, curiosity and excitement, rather than trepidation due to lack of experiences and growth opportunities in learning, communication skills, and social interactions,” Jan said.
Support from donors like Jan, made possible through the Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools, helps bring critical resources and opportunities to students across the district. By connecting community investments with school needs, the Foundation helps Vancouver Public Schools provide early learning experiences that give every child a strong start. Together, we are helping ensure students are ready to learn, grow, and thrive for years to come.
