The Story behind the Shoe Box
In the 1980’s, the District’s superintendent Dr. Jim Parsley learned of a student who didn’t have adequate shoes to walk to school in. District funds cannot be used for this purpose, so he used his own money to purchase shoes for the student. Seeing how the child was impacted through the new pair of shoes inspired other educators who often saw students with unmet needs to begin collecting money which they stored in a shoe box. This communal act of kindness eventually led to the creation of the Vancouver School District Foundation #37 in 1988, now know as the Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools.
