Supporting students in the 2022-23 school year…

It’s back-to-school season!
The Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools is gearing up to help students begin a new school year happy, healthy, and ready to learn.

Donations to the Write from the Start School Supply Drive matched through 8/31!

Your donation to the Write from the Start School Supply Drive helps Vancouver Public School students start the school year with the supplies they need to be successful. Give now and your donation will be matched by Dick Hannah Dealerships, up to $10,000!

Around 11,000 students in Vancouver Public Schools qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a Federal indicator of poverty. Many families are unable to afford the added expenses associated with the start of the school year, which could mean falling behind on rent and utilities or reducing an already stretched food budget.

A gift of any amount will give a student the right tools to begin learning on the first day of school. Families can request supplies through their school’s Family-Community Resource Coordinator.

Supporting students in the 2022-23 school year…

In anticipation of increased need, the Foundation for VPS Board of Directors has increased our budget for direct student support by 15% for a total of $850,000!

A primary focus continues to be basic needs, which includes food, clothing, and hygiene support as well as housing stability assistance to prevent families from losing housing. Other areas of support are enrichment, mentoring, and family engagement; early learning; social and emotional health; and college and career readiness. This year, we’ll be adding support for the District’s two new family advocates as well as two new Mental Health and Wellness Coordinators who will be serving three middle schools. Additional funding will also support social-emotional health and resilience through the District’s IMPACT Project, engagement for early childhood special education families, shoes for secondary students, increased holiday support, and more.

Help support this mission with a monthly or one-time gift to our General Fund.

$120,000 in Engagement Grants available for 2022-23

Each school year Engagement Grants from the Foundation for VPS help teachers bring innovative learning experiences to their students. This fall, $120K in grants ranging from $1800-$5400 will be available to all 37 VPS schools. In addition to the school grants, the Foundation for VPS funds other enrichment opportunities such as mentoring programs, family events, early learning, college and career readiness, social-emotional health and resilience, and resources to decrease absenteeism. During the 2021-22 school year grants were used for a variety of programming including trips to art and science museums, motivational speakers and presenters on social justice issues, field data collection at local lakes and streams, school garden projects, mobile black history museum visits to several high schools, and an outdoor “winter wonderland petting zoo” family night. The Foundation for VPS has awarded more than one million dollars to fund innovative and exciting projects that enrich student learning.
